What are photovoltaic energy communities?
Solar energy communities are collective initiatives formed by citizens, businesses, and local government organizations (LGOs) with the goal of producing clean, renewable energy. These communities enable active participation in the energy transition, allowing members to leverage photovoltaic technology to reduce their energy costs.
The regulatory framework in Greece ensures favorable conditions for the establishment and operation of these communities, promoting local entrepreneurship, energy democracy, and environmental protection.
Why join a PV energy community?
Participating in an energy community offers multiple benefits:
1) Financial benefit
By self-consumption of the produced energy or selling it to the grid, you reduce your electricity bills and win in the long term.
2) Environmental contribution
Take an active part in protecting the environment by reducing your carbon footprint and promoting clean energy sources.
3) Independence from major suppliers
Energy democracy gives citizens and small and medium-sized businesses the opportunity to gain control over energy production and consumption, independent of the big “players” in the energy sector.
Who can participate?
ll citizens, businesses, as well as Local Government Organizations can participate in energy communities.
There are, however, certain restrictions that ensure the locality and democracy of the processes: at least 51% of the members must be directly related to the district where the community is located, while no member can own more than 20% of the shares, thus ensuring that the community operates in a democratic manner.
What can a PV energy community do?
Energy communities have the ability to develop and operate renewable energy (RES) projects such as:
Installation of photovoltaic systems
in buildings or parks for self-consumption or sale of the generated energy to the grid.
Operation of industrial or agricultural energy production units
from renewable sources such as biomass or biogas.
Energy autonomy for businesses and homes
where the PV system may be located at a different location from the point of consumption.
What is virtual self-production?
Virtual Net Metering is an innovative solution for those who do not have available space on their property for installing a photovoltaic system. Through this system, energy generated from a renewable energy installation can be used for self-consumption at any other point within the same regional grid. This allows you to enjoy the financial benefits of clean energy production without requiring physical space on your property.
